The Dental Department of Rajanukul Institute recently organized “Oral Health Promotion for Intellectual Disabled and Special Needs People” course for dentists in rural areas. It was held from 2nd to 6th February , 2015.The purpose was to enhance the accessibility of these groups of people in remote areas where there were lack of dental services.
According to the National Statistic Office, Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, in the year 2007, 2.9% of total populations in Thailand were disabled. Among the disabled people, 2% had intellectual disabilities. It is estimated that there are approximately current 600,000 intellectual disabled people in Thailand.
Due to the limitations of health service system to take care of these people, opportunity to access the dental service is lacking. Many of them suffer from oral diseases, and this is a major health problem. Therefore the Dental Department of Rajanukul Institute organized this special health care course in order to improve knowledge and skills for dentists in rural areas. Moreover, this course enhanced the trainee skills and developed more effective dental service system.
This was the first time of this course was organized which there were 10 dentists from eight districts in Chiangmai and Chiangmai Provincial Public Health Office to join this course.
